Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Events in 2020 and 2021 make it clear that there exists systemic racism in the United States and in the running community. We are evaluating our role in supporting a safe and inclusive community for all runners, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and the like.

The Impalas have pledged to work toward:
• supporting our Black, Indigenous, People Of Color teammates; and
• improving equity and inclusion on our team and in the greater running community.

Our Equity Inclusion Committee, made up of a diverse group of Impala Racing Team members, recommended actions to promote equity, inclusivity, and diversity on the Impalas and in the running community, in both the short and long term. In addition, we held an internal webinar to listen to and elevate the voices of our BIPOC teammates. We value the backgrounds and personal experiences of our teammates, and we strive to make sure all members feel welcome on this team. With the 2021 Board of Directors, we are creating a new position of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director.  The DEI Director will manage the development and implementation of DEI initiatives.

We are committed to supporting equity and inclusion in the greater running community. Most recently we have developed a partnership with Back on My Feet, an organization dedicated to combating homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources. Through this partnership, our teams have mutually supported one another in races, and the Impalas have been able to provide coaching and race preparation resources to Back on My Feet members. In addition, we dedicated our pandemic virtual race series to supporting and raising awareness for a number of organizations that promote equity and inclusion, including Running for a Better Oakland, Black Girls RUN!, Outdoor Afro, 1000 Mile Club and Back on My Feet. We will continue to seek out partnerships with organizations that align with our mission. Organizations that would like to partner with the Impalas in the future are welcome to contact us at impalaracingteam.info@gmail.com.

We have largely paused our new applicant cycle given the current restrictions on gatherings. However, we strongly encourage women of diverse backgrounds who are interested in joining the Impalas to reach out directly to our new member coordinator (impalamembership@gmail.com).
