Organized Impala workouts consist of track interval training on Tuesday nights and workouts in Golden Gate Park Saturday mornings. Monthly workout schedules consist of a training plan designed to meet the season's goals.

Coach Tony Coffey sets the tone of the workouts and season goals. Interval (track) workouts are geared towards competing in a variety of distances, from track to marathon.

"It's like teaching a classroom full of gifted students. I provide a focus in their training and keep them from going too hard during our twice weekly team workouts... My biggest challenge is trying to meet the individualized needs of a varied group of athletes while also maintaining the group dynamic."

Tuesday night track workouts are at Kezar Stadium on Lincoln Avenue at 2nd Avenue at 6pm. The synthetic track is lit. After a short meeting, we warm-up for half an hour followed by 3-5 miles of interval work on the track, finishing with a cool down. Intervals are timed by the coaches. During the lighter summer months, the team may head out into the park after the meeting for a road or trail workout. Our Tuesday workout group is typically 20-40 runners.

Saturday morning workouts are led by one or both coaches and start on JFK Drive at Stow Lake Drive at 8:30am. They consist of an hour and a half or so of fartlek, tempo runs or hill workouts through scenic Golden Gate Park. Often these workouts are on park trails and supplement track workouts with low impact alternative speed training and strength development. This is usually a smaller group of 10-15 runners.

At both locations, there are restrooms available and street parking. There is a pay lot on Stanyan, just east of Kezar. Weather in the Sunset can be much cooler than other parts of the Bay Area and San Francisco, so dress accordingly.

Many team members meet in smaller groups during the rest of the week, or for Sunday morning long runs in the City or Marin.
