Impalas recognize achievement and contribution weekly, usually accompanied
by an award of some sort, but here are the official ones...
Peet's Performer of the Week: Coach Tony's award for outstanding achievment
each week.
SOCKS
There are four quarterly SOCKS awards: RACING, YELL, SUPPORT, OTHER. R.Y.S.O - run your socks off! Each winner gets a pair of socks.
The RACE winner is someone who has recently had an outstanding performance.
She may be a speed demon or a member who has made a breakthrough in her
training.
The YELL winner shows up at races and fulfills that vital function of
cheering the team on.
The SUPPORT winner might have organized a fundraiser, helped a board member,
or worked on our newsletter or website.
And then there is the OTHER category -- for organizing parties, recruiting
and coordinating volunteers for our Impala events, taking on a project.
The ingenious part of the Socks award is that each winner chooses her
successor. "That way," explains Kathi Berman, who was on the
board when the awards began, "whoever won had to pay attention to
her teammates, and that increased people's awareness and appreciation
of one another."
The Annual Stockton Cup
The Stockton Cup is a coveted award that is passed along as a perpetual
trophy each year. The previous year's recipient polls the team to find a member who embodies
all of the criteria for membership listed in the Team By-laws, but in
some way, goes beyond those values as well. This is not simply an award
for speed.
The trophy is a silver bowl mounted on a wooden base, and inscribed with
the words, "Impala Racing Team Outstanding Member". This award
was originally won by Hilary Naylor at the 1983 Stockton Marathon, where
she won first place. In 1985, Hilary donated the trophy to the Team for
use as a perpetual award.
Beers of the Year
These are usually awarded at the discretion of our coaches and Board at
the annual meeting, often in recognition for an outstanding effort in
racing, team support or just life.
